NICAS Bouldering
NICAS Bouldering is a nationally-recognised developmental bouldering scheme for ages 5 and above — from complete beginners to experienced climbers looking to sharpen their skills.
Designed to develop bouldering technique, movement skills, and problem-solving, participants work through the scheme at their own pace starting from Level 1. Each level builds on the last, developing confident, independent boulderers.
The Five Levels
The NICAS Bouldering scheme is divided into five progressive levels, each focused on technique, movement, and confidence on the bouldering wall:
An entry-level award for beginners. Introduces fundamental bouldering concepts including balance, movement basics, warm-up and cool-down procedures, safety terminology, and responsible climbing practices on the wall.
Covers equipment awareness, route reading, an introduction to bouldering grades, safety behaviours, and intermediate movement techniques. Participants develop the confidence to explore a wider range of problems.
Aligns with standard independent climbing requirements. Participants master spotting technique, risk management, hold identification, and advanced movement skills — giving them the knowledge to climb safely and independently at any facility.
Develops self-motivated climbers with a wide range of technical skills and a high level of competence. Emphasises personal goal-setting, training awareness, and continued progression planning.
The advanced tier, focusing on personalised training programmes, competition experience, and comprehensive bouldering knowledge. Graduates demonstrate expert-level skill and a deep understanding of the sport.
